This week Microsoft outlined plans to introduce 250 million users of its Teams software to a virtual world called the metaverse. The move follows Facebook's vision for office meetings run in a virtual world. And it comes days after the social media company changed its name to Meta to reflect its focus.

By designing the metaverse for online business and social experiences, Facebook (sorry, Meta) is aimed at Microsoft's own experiences for collaboration and blending. In the first half of 2022, Microsoft has pledged to deliver a metaverse for online meetings across everything from smartphones to hybrid headsets. The technology? Mesh for Microsoft Teams (although the concept is called the metaverse is rather stretchy).
